Right now, Army Pfc. Tyler McGibbon has his eyes set on recovering from injuries he sustained when his Humvee rolled over in Kuwait in December 2014, which put him in a coma. McGibbon, who woke up from the coma three months after his accident, still has a long road of recovery ahead of him as he goes to several different therapies every day at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC).

Peter Fellmer has been stopped more frequently recently because his uniform looks a bit different than ones normally seen onboard Naval Support Activity Bethesda. That’s because his uniform is issued by the German navy (Deutsche Marine) reserve, joint medical service. Fellmer, a vascular surgeon, came to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) on a Military Reserve Exchange Program in which he was integrated into the vascular surgery department for two weeks.

They’re here for juvenile court hearings or for child welfare cases — custody hearings, foster care and abandonment issues.

A local mill operator is looking to transform his operation from old-growth to young-growth and is seeking assistance from the federal government to make the transition. Steve Seley, owner of Pacific Log and Lumber, has submitted a plan that he thinks will go over well with the Obama administration. Seley said he needs new equipment to transform his mill into a second-growth operation.

The $25.7-million Gravina Island Highway has been open for a week and is being used by local residents. Ketchikan International Airport Manager Mike Carney said he has seen hunters, bikers and drivers using the road. "As it goes on, (there will) be more people that come," Carney said on a tour of the newly completed road Thursday. Two trucks driving on the road were spotted during the tour. The road has been nicknamed the "Road to Nowhere" to mimic the "Bridge to nowhere," the name given to the community's preferred bridge alternative after it became a national symbol of wasteful spending. The road was designed as the connecting link between that bridge and the Ketchikan International Airport.

Walk inside the Tongass Historical Museum and find Tlingit and Haida artifacts, pictures documenting Ketchikan's history, but also find a bear's deformed skull encased in glass. At first glance, the skull does not look like much, but read the inscription below to discover that the bear, named Old Groaner, had five bullets lodged in its head and lost one eye. Also learn that Bruce Johnstone killed the brown bear 70 years ago with his .38-72 Winchester Rifle. This encounter cemented Bruce Johnstone's place in Ketchikan's history. He died earlier this month at the age of 97. Johnstone was a handlogger, pilot, World War II veteran, hunting guide, prospector, trapper, mill worker, husband and father, as well as early explorer of Southeast Alaska.
